I’m going to my first virtual party today!
For this party, I get to invite either my “muse” or one of my characters. The plan is to answer a series of questions and then share my answers with other bloggers attending the same virtual party. As far as I’m concerned, this is going to be a perfect party: no cover charge, no one snapping embarrassing pics to post on Facebook, and no need to worry about a designated driver.
Who is your muse (or character)? Tell us a little bit about him/her and why you brought them.
I’ve chosen to bring along Cassie from my current WIP, Their Love Rekindled, because I’d really like to get to know her better. She needs to remember how to have fun after twelve years of trying to prove that she was good enough for the man she married. Now that she’s a widow, she needs to get back in touch with her roots, with herself, and figure out just where she wants to be in life.
I think that bringing Cassie along to a party like this is the perfect way to bring her out of her shell and gradually introduce her back into the world. I get the feeling she could be a lot of fun once she opens up a bit.
What are you guys wearing? Dressing up or keeping it casual?
I’m pretty casual about things because I’m the type who considers myself dressed up if I remember to put on lipstick. Cassie, on the other hand, is the type who always overdresses. Black skirt, silk blouse, pearls, and a pair of killer pumps. She’s even got the matching bag. If you look closely, though, you might notice the tiny stain on the front of the blouse that she tried to camouflage with a scarf. Or the spot where she had to repair a little tear near the hem of her skirt. But really, no one can tell that she used a black Sharpie to cover up the scuff marks on those shoes.
It’s a potluck! Did you bring something yummy?
I brought a double batch of my peanut butter no-bakes, which Cassie grudgingly approved as being healthy because of the oatmeal in them. She brought a veggie tray, but I’ve already caught her sneaking cookies instead of carrots.
Open bar! What are you both drinking (booze or otherwise)?
I’m a sucker for a sweet German wine, so I go straight for the Auslese, but Cassie has an impulsive moment and opts for an Oberon. “It’s made in Michigan, so I’m supporting a local business,” she explains when I question her choice.
Wallflowers or social butterflies?
Cassie is really good at these things, so she’s more of a social butterfly. She learned how to “work a room” during her years with Miguel. After her second Oberon, she’s definitely becoming a bit less proper and a lot more charming.
I’m usually the type to talk too much and get too loud at parties like this, especially when I don’t know anyone. But today I’m more of a wallflower, having fun standing off to the side and watching Cassie let loose just a little bit.
What song(s) will you and your muse sing for karaoke?
Okay, it’s going to take a lot of Oberon and Auslese to get the two of us to do Karaoke, but there’s no question about the song. It’s got to be Meat Loaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” although I’ll probably lose the coin toss and end up singing Meat Loaf’s part. Cassie really rips through Ellen Foley’s part of the song, and it’s time to stop when she gets choked up singing, “It was long ago and it was far away, and it was so much better than it is today.”
What’s your favorite party game?
I’m a victim of the 80’s, so the only party game I remember is Fuzzy Duck. Which may explain why some of my college memories are a bit, er fuzzy. Cassie’s not really big on games, not even after all of the Oberon. She’s happy to stand back and let others play while she watches and cheers everyone on.
Which one of you is more likely to end up dancing on a table top?
Neither one of us. Cassie is learning to relax a little bit, but it’s too soon to expect that much from her. As for me, well, I might risk it if the table was made of concrete. Otherwise, it would be a terribly cruel thing to do to an innocent table.
Has your muse been a good date and would you ever hang out with them again?
It’s been a great date. I feel like I know Cassie a little bit better. I would love to hang out with her some more, especially if we need someone to commiserate with when the virtual hangover hits.
